General Studies Curriculum Grades 1-5

In grades 1-5, we strive to help students achieve success in all subjects, helping students reach their full potential, no matter their starting point. Our extensive resource department offers support to students in need of extra help or enrichment.

We begin the executive function program in these years, helping students learn to keep desks, lockers and backpacks organized, complete homework on time and bring the right materials to and from school.

Following are the focus of every subject in our general studies curriculum

Reading

Our new Reading Workshop program in grades 1-3 encourages students to choose and read books with greater independence as they practice the skills used by expert readers. As students mature, the focus moves from decoding and fluency to analysis of literary themes and elements of fiction. Students also read a range of non-fiction, including informational texts. In 5th grade, all students participate in the Battle of the Books competition, which culminates in the final weeks of the year.

Writing: Student focus on writing in increasing detail and at greater length from year to year. Assignments include creative, informative, persuasive, argumentative and expository writing. Our writing workshop program creates opportunities for students to draft, edit their work with peers and teachers, redraft and publish their writing. We teach cursive in 3rd grade, as well as keyboarding skills. Spelling, vocabulary and grammar are taught throughout.

Math

We use the My Math program from 1st through 5th grade. We emphasize three main areas — computation, math concepts and problem solving. There are opportunities for accelerated learning and enrichment throughout.

Science: Students are introduced to scientific concepts and study through textbooks and the Foss Science Kits. They learn the scientific method through experimentation and practice. Units covered include air and water, solids and liquids, sound and light, the solar system, plants, biomes and many others.

Social Studies

Our emphasis in social studies is to move from the students’ most immediate experience to an understanding of their place in the larger world. Students begin studying their communities and U.S. holidays, then study Chicago, states and early American history in grades 3-5, respectively. Students read informational texts, complete projects, go on field trips and participate in fairs.

Specials: We offer students a number of opportunities outside of the regular curriculum. Students have gym once a week and attend library once a week for a guided lesson and to check out books. Students in grades 1-3 have music or art once a week as well. In 5th grade, students have Art Appreciation classes and take a field trip to the Art Institute.
By the end of 4th grade, boys are prepared to join a minyan, which they do beginning in 5th grade. Additionally, 5th-8th grade boys and girls daven Mincha every day at school.

General Studies Curriculum Grades 6-8

In our middle school, our emphasis is on guiding students to greater independence in their studies. Our executive function program is embedded into our regular curriculum and helps students continue to become more organized, plan and complete big projects, set goals, understand their strengths and weaknesses as learners and manage their time effectively.

Language Arts

Students read novels of increasing complexity in these years. They learn to write analytically and express opinions with textual support. Text styles include creative, informative, persuasive and expository writing. Our writing workshop creates opportunities for students to draft, edit their work with peers and teachers, redraft, and publish their writing. Grammar and vocabulary remain important aspects of lessons.

Math

Students work through algebraic and geometric concepts in 6th grade, with an emphasis on problem solving and real-world application. Students continue into pre-algebra and algebra in grades 7 and 8. We adopted the Glencoe Math series in fall 2015 for all middle school students.  Opportunities for acceleration and enrichment are available.

Science

In 6th grade, the emphasis is on earth science and weather. The 7th grade focuses on life science, while 8th grade covers aspects of chemistry and physics. The scientific method is expanded upon, and students participate in laboratory experiments of increasing complexity.

Social Studies

Students study the ancient world in 6th grade, then move on to American history in grades 7 and 8, culminating in the 8th grade Constitution Test.  Students visit Springfield, Ill. and Washington, D.C. as part of the social studies curriculum.
